November 12 session introduced motors (Coach Andy started with showing motorized clocks from the previous session). The challenge was to make a car (with battery pack as part of the car) to compete in a drag race held at the end of the session. Tarik won the race! We did not do much theory on the motors, and let the kids try to "figure out" most on their own. The tricky things with motors are to load the batteries in the battery pack, mount the motor in a stable way (so it does not get dislodged), get the force from the motor to the axel (gears, pulley, gearing up or down), and getting the power cable out of the way. They did good (although most ended up with pulley systems). We will be revisiting those tricky aspects over the next weeks.
